Welcome to St Magaret College, Feyiase, the centre of excellnce in academia. We aim a contributing to Ghana’s employment and human resource capacity building by providing technological and commercial education at tertiary level and to provide other related programmes such as research and consultancy to improve productivity in industry and commerce.
The St. Margaret College was established through the visionary impetus of Madam Margaret Oteng. Her passion for education started with the setting up of a Creche in 1992 at Obuasi to assist parents who needed a place to keep their infants so that they concentrate on their jobs. The success of the Creche encouraged her to put up structures for a primary school in 1994. This passion grew into a vision to go all out and therefore established a Junior High School in 1996 and a Senior High School in 2000 all at Obuasi. Buoyed with the success of this educational enterprise, Madam Margaret Oteng moved to Feyiase near Kumasi and in 2006 established another Senior High School.
Feyiase is a historical town of the Ashantis and is located about 15 km from the centre of Kumasi., the second capital city of Ghana, and about 190km from Ghana’s capital, Accra. Its coordinates are 6°36’0″ N and 1°34’0″ W and an altitude 230 m. It is a small but fast growing town on the road from Kumasi to Lake Bosumtwi, in the Bosumtwi District of the Ashanti Region and has a population of about 44,000.
Lake Bosumtwi, situated within an ancient meteorite impact crater created by a large meteorite strike that took place around 1.07 million years ago, is approximately 8 kilometres across and the only natural lake in Ghana. It is only about 15 km from Feyiase and is a popular recreational area and a tourist attraction.
Feyiase is however known for The Battle of Feyiase which was the decisive battle in the struggle that led to the Ashanti Empire replacing Denkyira as the dominant power among the Twi-speaking Akan peoples. Prior to this battle the Denkyirahene Ntim Gyakari dominated the Asantes, having driven the Ashanti (Asante) forces from Adunkra, Aboatem and Aputuogya. However, Osei Tutu the Asante King, ambushed the forces of Denkyira at Feyiase where the full force of Asante fell upon the Denkyira forces, and routed them. Ntim Gyakari was killed and the power of Denkyira was broken.
It is in this historical town that Madam Margaret Oteng, with her unyielding desire to empower young ones to be better key players in society to promote national development, decided to establish the St. Margaret University College, the physical construction of which started on 15th October, 2009, and was completed in 2012.
The College which is one of the few well resourced academic centres in Ghana in terms of infrastructure and teaching and learning facilities successfully admitted its first batch of students in September 2014.
